LEVER AND FULCRUM
If you are familiar with the concept of mechanical leverage then you know that a “lever and fulcrum” describes a simple machine system that allows someone to produce “leverage.” LEVERAGE IS THUS DEFINED AS THE ABILITY TO MAXIMIZE THE MINIMAL EFFORT REQUIRED TO MOVE AN OBJECT.
So perhaps you have used leverage to move a heavy rock from a hole. In so doing, you probably used a lever such as a crowbar. You placed the tip of the lever under the rock. Then, you needed a fulcrum, a fixed point to support the lever. You placed your fulcrum, a smaller rock or board between the heavy rock and the place on the lever where you would push to lift the heavy rock.
And How Does One Get the Best Leverage?
The best leverage is obtained when you know just where to place the fulcrum. THE CLOSER YOU PLACE THE FULCRUM TO THE OBJECT YOU WISH TO LIFT, THE GREATER THE LEVERAGE.
Archimedes said of of leverage…”Give me a place to stand and I can move the earth.”
If we wish to lift local government back up from under the weight of federal and state control, WHAT IF WE MOVED OUR FIXED ATTENTION, OUR FULCRUM, FROM WASHINGTON D.C. CLOSER TO HOME?
Unlike today, back in the early part of the twentieth century it was rare to ever hear about the federal government. We believed the most important unit of government was the family, followed by town, followed by state, and then and rarely by federal. Any notion of international government by any politician would have been an active flirtation with treason.
Our founders believed that the most local government should be the strongest because those who serve in local governmental posts are always in a “face to face relationship with their constituents.” That close proximity makes it so much harder for politicians to lie or steal. Local control also means that citizens have a far better grasp and a much greater stake by what is directly taking place in their government and community.
It is time to bring our message to the local level where the sheer critical mass of citizen attention will reinvigorate our local leaders to start reusing and reclaiming their dormant authority.
