Perhaps you have recently attended one of your state’s anti-tax rallies. That is good. But, tax rallies alone are insufficient to make the types of changes that we as Americans need to implement to arrest the growth and intrusion of “out of control” government in our lives.

Here in Connecticut, we learned the hard way about the folly of investing all our emotional energies into singular events. Back in the 1990s we had a huge anti-tax rally to protest the vastly unpopular new state income tax that was railroaded through our legislature in the middle of the night. On Rally Day, state police estimated that 40,000 people showed up in our state capitol to chant “Axe the Tax.” This was, in fact, the largest turnout for any significant statewide political protest in our small state’s history. Citizen turnout was particularly significant when one factors in that this rally was held during the day and in the middle of the work week. The people believed this would certainly get the state’s attention and would cause the state to recognize the will of the majority and therefore repeal the hated tax.

Our then Governor, Lowell Weicker, oft described as “arrogance in a rumpled suit,” dismissed the taxpayer turnout by saying he had seen more people show up for one of the local county fairs. The people slinked away, totally demoralized. And just as the politicians had predicted, by the time elections rolled around, there was insufficent anger left in the people to seek electoral retribution. Sadly, the state income tax predictably did not relieve our financial burdens. It just gave the legislators more money to “not spend well.”

In all other respects, we are all on the same team, working to the same end.

As for the issues—There may be many issues we present that you will not agree with our approach or agree to the extremes with which we have presented our political posturing. Still, we encourage you to walk with us in lock step. It is important that you understand our strategic position on “polarity.” This will clarify much of the whys and wherefores of what we do. And you certainly are free to pick and choose which issues you choose to enlist your actions. But, we hope you will participate in as many as possible to keep abundant and steady pressure on our elected officials.

It’s solely important that we all agree that FIRST WE NEED TO BE FREE of oppressive government. Then and only then, after we are once again free, should we worry about the details.
