The Value of Distractions

Once upon a time, a sailor was in port and due some shore leave. But, as the sailor went to depart the ship, the officer in charge of granting shore passes stopped the young man. The officer pointed out that the sailor’s hair was rather shabby looking and in need of a cutting. The sailor would not be allowed to go on leave until the sailor’s hair was regulation length.

The sailor ran down to the ship barber’s office. But, the ship’s barber had himself gone ashore.
The sailor was desparate to vacation on land. So he needed a plan.

The sailor retired to his quarters and grabbed up some shoe polish. He spiffed, buffed and shined his shoes to a mirror like finish.

He then returned to the shore leave officer. He pointed to his shoes and asked if his shoes were now shiney enough to be granted leave. The officer looked at the shoes, complemented the job the sailor had done polishing the shoes, and the officer waived the sailor through to the gang plank where the sailor enjoyed his well deserved vacation time.
