The Soul of Collective Will
Once upon a time, in the far off land of the Soviet Union, back in days of old, one of the Party Committee members was directed to show a visiting Capitalist dignitary the local sites. The Committee Man was quite eager to show the dignitary the superior virtues of the Soviet system. He ordered a car and drove the dignitary deep into the Russian countryside.
Along the side of the road was a farmer. The Committee Man pulled his car up along side the farmer’s wagon, rolled down the car window and hailed the farmer. “Farmer, who has the best system of government?”
“Why we do of course.”
“And would you be willing to do anything for the good of the nation”
“Why yes, Comrade Committee Man, I would.”
“So if you had two horses, you would be willing to give one to the State for the good of the people”
“Why yes, Comrade Committee Man. I would gladly give one horse to the cause of the State.”
“And if you had two cows, you would willingly give one to the State, yes?
“Oh yes indeed Comrade, I would gladly give the State one of my two cows.”
“And if you had two fat pigs?”
“Surely I would keep one pig and send the other to the people.”
“So if you had two chickens, you would keep one and give the other to the State.”
“No.”
“No?”
“No. I actually have two chickens.”
